Gastrointestinal parasitism is a major challenge to the health and welfare of organic livestock. Although considerable research has taken place on alternative parasite control, farmers are still hesitating to implement novel approaches. In this video, Spiridoula Athanasiadou explains how the PrOPara project wants to change this. PrOPara is delivering new tools for parasite control and novel information based on surveys and stakeholder participation studies on current helminthic control strategies for ruminants around Europe. To ensure a significant impact on this, the researchers have incorporated a socioeconomic, status quo and farmers’ acceptance analysis. This will facilitate the wide deployment of integrated strategies by organic ruminant farmers.

Twenty years ago, Stefan Sobkowiak bought a commercial apple orchard with the intention of converting it to an organic orchard. He did just that, but eventually understood the limitations of the organic model originating from monoculture. He then decided to tear out most of the trees and replant in a way that would maximize biodiversity and yield while minimizing the amount of maintenance required. Inspired by permaculture principles, the orchard now counts over 100 cultivars of apples, plus several types of plums, pears, cherries, and countless other fruits and vegetables. Right from making Organic Manure for agriculture, treating the cow dung by collecting it in a pit, adding grass, pouring water and treating it for 25 days which makes the mixture soft to mixing the culture in it and making it usable manure, 24 Mantra Organic helps the farmers every step of the way. The complete farming process is mapped out for the farmer and is monitored by us on a regular basis. Giving them essential training to use these organic resources properly to ensure that the crops are of the highest quality is our core strength as the pioneers in Organic Farming.

At the core of organic farming is an ideology which bans the use of synthetic fertilizers and pesticides. Over the past couple decades, this ideology has been incrementally embraced by the scientific community. This mingling of science and ideology in organic farming research and education has serious consequences for both science and society. This video was first shown at the symposium titled ‘Sustainability Challenges in Organic Agriculture’ that was organized by the Organic Management Systems Community of the American Society of Agronomy at the Annual meeting in Phoenix, Arizona in November 2016

http://www.permies.com There are thousands of people willing to work on organic/permaculture farms for free or nearly free. Many farmers have explored this path and found it too frustrating and have elected to no longer do this. Here are two well known farmers that have had agreat success and this is their advice to farmers considering this path. Doug Bullock and Jacqueline Freeman give advice to farmers thinking of bringing some interns/wwoofers onto their farm. I get a slice of Doug Bullock's lunch time as he takes a break from being the guest instructor for a permaculture design course taught by Toby Hemenway. The Bullock Brothers Permaculture Homestead (http://www.permacultureportal.com) is famous for being a powerful intern magnet. Interns actually pay to go there. As a result, the Bullocks get to pick from a large pool of interns wanting to go there. And they have had excellent results with their intern program. Doug's advice includes: Establish your farm before you get interns. Don't ask your interns to do just the dirty work. A lot of interns come from a priveledged background - be prepared for that. Keep the work interesting. Look for interns with some skills and maturity. If you have three or fewer interns, you shoudl include them in your family. A hot tob, sauna or pizza oven really helps. Jacqueline Freeman of Friendly Haven Rise Farm (http://www.friendlyhaven.com) is famous for her beekeeping skills. She tells me that in the last five years she has had more than 90 interns/wwoofers. Some of Jacqueline's advice: Give interns the work that matches their personality. Praise interns when they have earned it. Teach interns something every day. Good food! Fun with work. A swim on a hot day is a good idea! To learn more about folks that want to come and work on your farm, visit the World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms at http://www.wwoof.org Music by Jimmy Pardo

Gary Williams and his partner Emily Williams live on a small permaculture farm in the lower North Island of New Zealand. They have regenerated this 50 hectare property over 25 years and retired large parts for native forest regrowth. This charming farmstay, along with a guest eco-cabin, includes: home gardens, orchards, food forests, staple crops, animal grazing, firewood plantation forests, and tree buffer wilderness areas. Gary and Emily's stewardship of the land has been guided by the principles of permaculture and the methods of organic and biodynamic agriculture. Gary sees himself as an integrated part of the larger organism that is his family home and farm. John from http://www.growingyourgreens.com/ goes on a field trip to Blue Horizon Farm, a 1.5 acre farm that practices biointensive, organic and veganic growing techniques. In this episode, you will learn how a family has converted 1.5 acres of grass, weeds and trash into a productive organic farm t hat produces 25% of the food the family eats and is growing to increase that number. John will take you on a tour of this farm, sharing with you all the major areas of the farm including: Composting Area, Seed Starting Area, Fertilizer Area, Garden Bed Area, Fruit Tree Orchard, and much, much more. You will discover how this family farm doesn't use plastic to start its seeds to grow baby plant starts, but instead uses homemade wooden crates with a soil blocker. You will also learn how this family makes it own fertilizer by using a special plant that they grow on site: confrey. You will learn one of the best leafy green vegetables that should be grown in the hot summer season in South Florida. You will discover why John is weary of produce that "looks too good" and what to do with your produce when it has bug holes and is imperfect. Finally, John will sit down with Laura Sutton, one of the farmers and ask her questions about the farm such as: Why did you decide to start the farm? Why do you use comfrey tea? Why did you choose not to grow animals on your farm? Why are adding fermented foods to your diet important? and much, much more Subscribe to GrowingYourGreens for more videos like this: https://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=growingyourgreens Follow John on Instagram at: https://www.instagram.com/growingyourgreens/ Referenced Videos: Harvesting Malabar Spinach Berries to Make Juice https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Gl2HjFt0IU Connect with Laura and Purchase her Fermented Foods at: http://drinkliveculture.com
